Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal toward Spectators

The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“It was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”

Historical Precedent for Owner Fines

This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:

  • Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the wealthy owner.

Offseason Issues and Public Spotlight

This event follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that explored his influence in building the Cowboys into the globe’s most valuable athletic organization, despite its modern-era title shortcomings.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones underscores its continuing effort to uphold professional conduct among all team officials, regardless of their status or wealth.
