Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
